Holocaust victims are commemorated on April 24 in Russia. Numerous events are taking place in Moscow and in many regional cities today. This date is known as Day of Catastrophe and Heroism all over the world. It coincides with the date of Jewish Ghetto Uprising, which took place in 1943 in Warsaw, as per RIA Novosti.

Russian Jewish Congress has advised that veterans meet youth, light candles and read commemorative prayers on this day.

Organizers have explained that this date has not been celebrated so widely before. The main audience this year will consist of school pupils, teachers and students. The focus will be made on educational aspect.

Young people are taking part in Memory Marathon. Veterans will share horrors of Ghetto and death camps with them. The event is taking place in Memorial Synagogue at Poklonnaya hill. The seminar for teachers and directors of Jewish Sunday schools from all across the country will be held there too. The mourning howler will sound at the commemorative ceremony; the one heard in Israel every year.

Many other regions have joined the campaign. For example, Orel school pupils will meet members of local Jewish community who survived the Holocaust time.

Unlike International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which coincides with anniversary of Oswiecim Liberation by the Red Army, and is celebrated January 27, this day is dedicated to the Jewish who opposed to their executioners.
