The first tourist group from Japan leaves for the Kuril Islands, TASS reports. The trip will begin on Hokkaido Island. A ship with tourists will leave the port of Nemuro. The final destination is the islands of Kunashir and Iturup.

The trip will become a pilot project. According to Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, it is planned to establish a full-fledged permanent tourist route on its basis. He noted that the group would consist of more than forty people, including travelers and those accompanying them.

The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that the trip would help to find a solution to the problem of the northern territories, as the southern islands of the Kuril ridge are called in Tokyo. The minister also hopes that the consultations with the Russian authorities on joint economic activities on the islands will advance after the trip.

The tour is scheduled until November 4. Visits to Orthodox churches and museums will take place on Kunashir, while on Iturup tourists will visit hot springs and explore the white cliffs.
